Learn about the secrets behind Reykjavik's finest beers and spirits from two of the city's leading microbreweries and distilleries. Travelers keen to immerse themselves in the magic that leads to some of Iceland's best-tasting alcoholic beverages should book this private guided tour now.

The tour starts when your local driver-guide picks you up from your Reykjavik hotel. You'll then head to the Malbygg Microbrewery to begin your tasty excursion.

The Malbygg Microbrewery is a craft brewery that opened in 2017. They mainly produce hoppy beers but also experiment with other unique tastes. As you enter the brewery, you'll be introduced to the history of brewing in Iceland.

The friendly people at Malbygg will give you the lowdown on the basics of brewing. Moreover, they'll showcase the different kinds of beer they create and the processes they go through. You'll also see the brewing equipment they use, and your tour guide will explain how they operate these machines.

Malbygg Microbrewery also has a taproom where you can taste their fine creations. To date, the brewery has eight kinds of beer that you can try on-site. They also offer a special tray featuring four types of beer so you can enjoy the best of the variety on offer.

The tour's second stop is the Eimverk Distillery, about 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) from Malbygg Microbrewery. Your driver will take you to this family-owned distillery, built in 2009. It's Iceland's first and only whiskey distillery.

Here, you'll learn about the history of distilling in Iceland. You'll also get the basics on the distillation process and the kinds of spirits Eimverk Distillery produces. Your guide will also share the key ingredients they use to deliver the exquisite taste of their whiskeys.

The Eimverk Distillery aims to provide premium Icelandic liquors using only the finest ingredients in the country. Their efforts resulted in three fine-tasting spirits: Floki, Vor, and Viti, which you'll get to sample today.

Floki is their single-malt whiskey creation that took four years to finish through more than 100 trial distillations and maturation tests. The long and detailed process makes the whiskey the first of its kind in the country.

Meanwhile, Vor and Viti came from the same base spirit as the Floki whiskey. Vor is Eimverk Distillery's pot-distilled gin, while Viti is their version of the Icelandic Brennivin or "black death." Interestingly, Vor gin bagged a Double Gold award at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2014.

Aside from seeing their whiskeys, you'll also see the equipment they use for distillation. Eimverk uses custom-made machines to produce their version of complex malt. Their products capture characteristics you'll also find in Bourbon, Irish, and Scottish whiskeys.

In case you're unaware, buying liquor in Iceland presents some challenges. The country prohibits selling even a bottle of gin or a can of beer directly to individuals or inside a supermarket. Instead, you can legally purchase alcohol from state-run shops called Vinbudin.

At the end of the tour, the driver will take you back to your Reykjavik hotel. Even though you can't bring drinks home, you got to enjoy some delicious samples today and can take home a better appreciation of Iceland's alcoholic products.
